Jalin Supports Digital Payment Integration through the Implementation of QRIS Cross-Border in Japan
Aug 17, 2025
As part of its commitment to advancing an inclusive and globally competitive national payment system, PT Jalin Pembayaran Nusantara (“Jalin”) is participating in Bank Indonesia’s strategic initiative to expand the implementation of QRIS Cross-Border internationally. Effective 17 August 2025, Indonesian travelers in Japan will be able to make payments at participating merchants by scanning QR codes using Indonesian payment applications.
This initiative is the result of close collaboration among Bank Indonesia, the Japan Payment System Association, the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI), and national switching service providers, including Jalin, which plays a key role in supporting domestic and regional transaction infrastructures.
Strengthening Cross-Border Connectivity through Digital Payments
The implementation of QRIS Cross-Border represents a strategic effort to enhance cross-border economic connectivity through secure, efficient, and interoperable digital payment systems. It enables Indonesian consumers to conduct cashless transactions abroad with greater convenience while supporting broader financial inclusion.
As of early 2025, Bank Indonesia data indicates that QRIS has been adopted by more than 35 million merchants nationwide, demonstrating strong domestic acceptance of QR code–based payments. The cross-border expansion extends these benefits internationally and creates new growth opportunities, particularly in tourism and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
QRIS now serves as a cross-border payment linkage, in line with Jalin’s vision to act as a key enabler in strengthening a secure, inclusive, and sustainable digital economy ecosystem.
Jalin’s Role in the International Expansion of QRIS
As one of Indonesia’s four national switching service providers, Jalin contributes beyond technical system integration by actively participating in system testing, standards development, and operational alignment with international counterparts.
In the Japan expansion initiative, Jalin supports sandbox and system testing processes to ensure seamless interoperability while maintaining high standards of security, performance, and user experience.
For other partner countries, including China, India, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia, Jalin continues to support ongoing collaboration at both regulatory and industry levels. This commitment underscores Jalin’s role as a strategic partner in strengthening Indonesia’s digital payment ecosystem and expanding its global footprint.
